A 5 Is Against the Law!: Social Boundaries - Straight Up! - An Honest Guide

The goal of "A 5 Is Against the Law",
The book was written by Kari Dunn Buron for young people who might unintentionally cross social boundaries because they have a hard time understanding them. The 5 point scale teaches a method for educating people about social norms and the possible repercussions of social missteps. There is a section in the book that is devoted to anxiety and how to handle this feeling before it gets out of control. The anxiety curve application suggestions are provided. During the workbook, educators are urged to consider and develop their own unique scales relating to particular topics. The book runs from $25 to $46 (amazon.ca).

The strengths of this book is that it is hand on material, it, it uses practical exercises, and the the book is written in an easy-to-understand manner. To make it simpler to comprehend the many levels of social behavior, the 5-point scale divides a social or emotional idea into 5 components. Many students with learning disabilities would have an easier time comprehending small steps and this because it is broken up into numbers. The strategy also employs a systematic way to teach complex and frequently frustrating social material.

Determine the person's issue areas before using the scale to promote emotional regulation. Problems with following regulations at work, playing with peers, or changing routines are a few examples. As you can see from the image above from Kari's book, the problem area is then divided into five segments, each of which is illustrated with a scale to clearly show the severity of the issue.

This 5 point scale idea can also be geared and tailored towards an individual group or child. For example, teachers could simplify it or buy a poster, as in the image below. The image below is a poster and a power point presentation that goes along with the poster. It can be purchased on Teachers Pay Teachers for $1.50 (Canadian).

This book is intended for use with either small groups  (Tier 2) or one-on-one instruction (Tier 3).
